The term “sabbat” usually refers to the eight seasonal celebrations observed by many Pagan traditions, but can also refer to any formal gathering of witches or Wiccans.
The seasonal celebrations include the Winter and Summer Solstices, the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes, and the four mid-points between the Solstices and Equinoxes, called cross-quarter days.
Ostara: Spring Equinox Celebration of Rebirth and Renewal
Southern Hemisphere September 20-23 / Northern Hemisphere March 20-23
Ostara, also spelled Eostre is the first day of spring. It also marks the time where day and night are equal and balanced. Ostara symbolises new life, and is a time of rebirth, regrowth and renewal. Mother Nature is waking up from a long cold Winter so we start to see new life coming through. New flower buds, new leaves popping up in trees, baby chickens and birds are hatching. In the Northern Hemisphere Easter is celebrated during Ostara which is why eating chocolate rabbits (symbolic of fertility) is part of their celebration.
**(Perhaps for us in the Southern Hemisphere, Easter is the time for us to stash some chocolate bunnies and freeze some hot cross buns to enjoy in September when we celebrate Ostara)
